Dictionary.com says homesteading is the act of establishing a dwelling with its land and building where a family makes its home. Origin 1890-95 or earlier.
For some people they think of their great grandparents travelling out west to participate in land grabs and acquiring land under the Homestead Act . While some think that true homesteading is living without things like electricity or running water and making your home and buildings from scratch, I think homesteading is more a way of life, a state of mind, and a want and drive to be as self sufficient as possible.
So don’t let your location, living conditions, or stage in your life determine whether or not you start homesteading. Start growing your own window sill herbs, container garden on your patio for fresh vegetables, or find or make plans for your very own chicken coop and get started!
Are you homesteading? Leave me a note in the comments and let me know what you have and where you want to get to, who knows….maybe I’ll highlight some ideas to get you going.
